A Green Kitchen
Monday, April 18th, 2011Going green and caring about our environment has become the in thing to do. If you want your kitchen to become more eco-friendly, methods to achieve this goal are easier than ever.
For starters, use CFL bulbs in place of the traditional incandescent lighting in your kitchen. It has a lot of advantages. It is very durable and fits in the same socket as that of normal bulbs. It uses about three quarters less electricity. It is recommended to build your kitchen in the outside portion so that it is easier for natural light to enter.
Old electrical appliances use a lot of energy, thus proving to be bad for environment. Use newer appliances with Energy Star label as they consume less energy. You may go in for a convection oven rather than the traditional convention oven.
Make sure your range hood is cleaned frequently and working properly. A poor range hood will not ventilate properly, creating a hotter kitchen and higher cooling costs. There are many energy efficient hoods in the market.
If you are remodeling your kitchen and budget is not a problem, you can opt for products made up of recycled materials like concrete, plastic, stone and even paper. Bamboo, a highly renewable product can also be used.
Always use a small pot or pan while cooking, as it requires less energy to heat. Size of the burner should also be according to the pan. For small jobs like melting butter etc, use microwave. Instead of plastic bags, which cannot be decomposed and recycled, go in for brown paper bags.
Induction cook tops are greatly more efficient than gas or electric range tops with a power saving of 40 to 70 percent. These cook tops use induction heating which involves an electromagnetic field causing resistance in an ferrous pot or pan.
Do not rinse plates before loading them in the dishwasher. Instead, scrape into the garbage can and load them dry. Unplug all electrical appliances when not in use. They suck energy from the power source if they are not switched off. Try to go organic whenever you can.
