Flowers And Their Different Meanings
Thursday, October 7th, 2010We are familiar with the concept of giving people flowers to mark certain occasions or just to help brighten up their day. However there are a whole raft of meanings linked to certain types of flowers with some believing they should only be given to signify certain occasions. The most familiar one to everyone is the idea of red roses on Valentines day.
In the world of flowers as gifts the idea of sending ones which are blue can be linked to trying to send a message of peace and sincerity. The colour blue is seen as having a calming influence so it has its place in being used to create this feeling in a room. The blue used for this is normally more subtle and is not a loud, strong blue colour which can be seen as overpowering.
One popular flower to send is the carnation. Within the carnation there are a number of meanings depending on the colour which you are sending. For example a white carnation can be used to mean pure love as well as wishing someone good luck then a dark red signifies deep love and affection for a person. If you admire someone then a light red carnation can be sent while a pink carnation is linked directly to the concept of a mothers love. You can quickly see that the meanings and symbolism behind flowers can be heavily linked to ideas and myths which go back into history.
If we quickly move to Asia and in particular China and Japan we can see that the chrysanthemum is a flower which plays an important part in their society. For Japan the chrysanthemum is seen as representing perfection. For the Chinese and Japanese it is the flower which is important more than the different colours that are available.
A sure fire sign that we are moving out of the cold winter months into a period of warmth and growth is the appearance of the daffodil. It should then come as no surprise that the daffodil is linked with a concept of regeneration and rebirth due to when it first appears. Many cultures refer to the daffodil for this very reason with them all dealing with the idea of rebirth.
Another flower which can have different meanings depending on the colour is the lily. A white lily is looked upon as meaning chastity and virtue while pink is seen as showing prosperity and wealth. You may see the lily at funerals as it is a popular flower to include due to the symbolism of it representing the persons soul now being innocent once again after death.
The final flower to mention here is the rose which we all see as showing love and devotion to a person. Red is the most famous colour thanks to Valentines day but other colours can mean different things. Innocence and humility is shown in a white rose but then friendship and joy is best suited for a yellow rose. Orange can be used for desire, pink for showing you appreciate someone and if it was love at first sight a purple rose is the one mostly used.
So this is just a few examples of how different flowers and different colours can be used to represent different things. It may indeed make you think a little bit more as you next get them for a certain person or certain time of year. However the most important thing over and above all of this is buying flowers which you know the person actually likes no matter what the meanings and symbolism behind them may be.
