Will My Old Stairlift Fit in My New House
Sunday, January 15th, 2012A lot of folk ask the question if we move house can we take our glide Stairlift with us. Bottom line very unlikely unless it is a straight Chairlift and the new staircase the unit is going to be installed on is the same length or shorter than your original staircase.
If the new staircase is shorter than the original staircase then there is a probability the track can be cut down to size/length to fit the new staircase. This sort of work should not be undertaken by the DIY fan.
If you have a curved Stair lift then you have extremely little or no possibility of taking it with you because of the rail being bespoke design! Custom made for the staircase it’s already installed on.
The only option you have got for curved Stairlifts is to keep the chair unit and get a new rail made from a specialist. Dependent on the age of the Stairlift they may recommend that you purchase a total new or renewed system.
The other issue with taking old Stair lifts to a new address is the hand of the unit. If it is a right hand unit! Looking up the staircase the Stairlift is on the right hand side then you would need to guarantee it is going to be installed on the right hand side of the new staircase.
Obviously the same is applicable for Left Hand units. Some Stairlifts can be changed to modify them to any hand (Right or Left) but this should only be undertaken by a professional engineer and all is dependent on the brand and model of Chairlift you have.
It might be wise to engage the services of a professional company who would be willing to execute a site survey of both properties and if the Stairlift can’t be installed in the new home they may offer to purchase the old unit or offer you a trade in price.
