It is generally good to light up the stair case well so as to prevent any kind of accidents due to insufficient lighting. So, for this purpose you can go for ceiling lights or recessed lights. Entrances and hallways should always be well lit. Use lighting fixtures every 8 to 10 feet in such areas. Also, make sure to have good amount of lighting in work areas, rooms with high ceilings and those with dark floors and walls.
Wall fixtures are used to provide illumination for a specific area such as a hallway or a bathroom vanity. While traditional wall fixtures with “arms” remain the most popular form of wall lighting, more contemporary wall sconces are gaining popularity, especially for hallway or accent lighting. Wall lighting can offer needed illumination levels to prevent accidents on stairs, especially when an overhead ceiling fixture is not feasible.
For reading in bed, use two matching wall mounted or pendant fixtures installed 30 inches above the top of the mattress.

Recessed lights are ideal for task areas where you require good focused lighting to perform the task conveniently. It is good for areas like kitchen counter, bathroom vanity etc.
Recessed lights are actually multi-purpose lighting fixtures.
