Caring For Your Outdoor Wood Table

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

When you have invested in an outdoor wood table, you need to know how to look after it. It is a good idea to get into the habit of cleaning it on a regular basis. A simple vacuum and a wipe with a damp cloth will work wonders.

Wooden outdoor furniture needs to be refinished on an annual or bi-annual basis in order to retain its beauty. This is a relatively simple job and certainly not something you should be afraid of. You can ask your local craftsman for a quotation or you can follow these tips and do it yourself.

The first step is to sand down your outdoor wood table. The surface needs to be smooth before you apply either the oil, water or gel based stain. Once you have sanded the entire piece go over it with the vacuum to get rid of any dust as it will only destroy the finish. Once that is done you will need to decide what type of stain you want to go with.

Oil based stains look great and can be used to turn the wood a darker color if you want a change. Water based stains are safer for the environment but can be a pain to use. They can cause the grain of the wood to rise which is best avoided. If you have never done any DIY work before you may prefer to use a gel based stain. These are more expensive but people find them easier to use and they give a great finish.

Regardless of which stain you use, always read the instructions and prepare properly in advance. Clean up any spills or excess drips before they dry. Use a cloth to apply the stains and take it easy letting each application dry thoroughly before you apply the next one to your outdoor wood table.

How To Care For Your Outdoor Wood Table

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

If you have recently purchased an outdoor wood table you will want to know how to care for it properly to make it last as long as possible. Wood is a natural product and with a little love and attention it can look fantastic.

The key to keeping your table in top condition is regular maintenance. There is little point in cleaning it once a year and hoping that it will look amazing. You need to clean it on a regular basis. Take a soft scrubbing brush and scrub the table free of all debris including leftover food, bird droppings, kid’s crayons and anything else that may have fallen on it. Don’t start washing it down until you do this as believe me dry bird droppings are much easier to remove.

Check the care instructions on the outdoor wood table and buy the recommended wood cleaning product. Follow the guide on the label especially when it comes to using the right quantity.

Use a spray to apply the cleaning product to the wood. Use your scrub brush to clean the table thoroughly by working it into any groves and dents to remove as much dirt as possible. If you get into the habit of doing this on a regular basis it will be much easier to keep it clean than trying to clean six months worth of dirt at one time.

When it is clean rinse with water to remove all the cleaning solution and leave to dry. This shouldn’t take long especially if you have picked a sunny day to do this task. You may want to apply either a protective coating or a little oil to return your outdoor wood table to its former beauty. When you are not using the table put a protective cover over it not only to help keep it clean but also to prolong its life.

What Style Of Outdoor Picnic Tables Do You Like

Friday, September 16th, 2011

As with any type of garden furniture there are many different styles of outdoor picnic tables. The type you buy will depend on your personal needs. How many people do you need to seat and how big a space do you have in your garden. Answering these two questions will narrow down your choice quite a lot.

Bench tables are very popular particularly among those who make their own furniture. They are useful when you have to seat a large number of people as typically the bench will take three whereas there would probably only be room for two separate chairs. They can be quite awkward though for older people to get in and out of so might not be the design to choose if you are going to entertaining the older generation.

If you do buy bench tables you may want to invest in some outdoor garden furniture cushions. Often they can become quite uncomfortable if sitting on them for long periods of time. If you are going to use the table for eating which is what it is designed for, you might want to buy machine washable covers. This is recommended if you have or will be entertaining children who seem to enjoy making a mess at your outdoor picnic tables.

If you do not like the idea of a bench style but still want an outdoor eating area you may want to go for a bistro style table instead. If you have a large family then a larger patio table might be a better buy. You could always have a mixture of both.

Have small outdoor picnic tables for the kids to eat at and have a larger more comfortable table for the adults to relax at. Kids enjoy eating with their friends and most adults enjoy a child free meal every once in a while too!
